Things That Go Beep in the Night

Last night, my sleep was punctuated by stupid dreams. For example, in one I wound up doing an IMDb search that revealed (with attached photos) that a pair of twin actors had played three different pairs of twin coroners on Law and Order.

Why would my subconscious waste its time conjuring this non-fact? As if I watch Law and Order, or anything remotely forensic. Yes, I have a twin fascination, but that doesn't really apply here.

Meanwhile, Robbie dreamed that his keyboard tray came unscrewed.

It's tempting to blame something we ate, and indeed we did get a little crazy at dinner – I replaced a fifth of the water in the Zatarain's jambalaya mix with tomato sauce! Why, it's a wonder we could sleep at all.

A few nights earlier, when the season's first "winter storm"* hit, the power went out at about 5 a.m., and the room was alive with the sound of computer backup batteries.

We both stumbled around in the dark, first for flashlights, then to shut down computers, then to turn off the various UPSs and silence their cries. Three different devices, beeping loudly and incessantly in different pitches and rhythms. And I thought, This is what a robot day-care would sound like.

* Translating again for non-San Franciscans: "winter storm" = rain.
