Yesterday's "null and void" ruling regarding San Francisco's gay weddings wasn't surprising, shocking, or disheartening. My advice to those who are taking it hard is to first pay attention to the ruling. Notice that it wasn't really about the rightness or legality of gay marriage, as the court had already warned it wouldn't be, but just about how it was attempted. I continue to applaud Gavin Newsom for the bold move, but there's not a strong argument to defend his route on a strictly legal basis. And why bother fighting for the legality of gay marriage if you don't respect the law you want to change? So first, pay attention to the ruling, then second, ignore it. The ponderings of judges shouldn't be allowed to distract from the pure love and joy of last February, and everyone who stood in line for the ceremony and the paper proclaiming their commitment and devotion should be just as proud of that moment as they were before. People can call these marriages "null and void" all day, but they're real, and only fools would pretend otherwise.

Our movie in the making has hit a couple of big pre-production hurdles, involving casting and landing locations, which along with the persistent gray skies has dampened my mood the last couple of weeks. But we've gotten to the point we can at least see over the barriers, and things should be rolling again soon.

Several people I know are excited about the opening of Alien vs. Predator. This puzzles me to no end.

Attention reporters, writers, and editors working on the Olympics: can the toga references. Togas were worn in Ancient Rome, not Ancient Greece. (Well sure, some Ancient, or even Young, Romans who happened to be in Greece probably wore togas, but you know that doesn't count.)

That said, I've never been less interested in the Games than I am this time. Is it that the Olympic dream has been cheapened by commercialism? Is it that my increased shunning of mass media (especially NBC) has kept me from being indoctrinated? Or am I just too damn busy to care?
