Geekscape
11:08 PMWe went back and forth on it for a long while, but finally Robbie and I made the perhaps inevitable decision: we would go to the Farscape convention this weekend. In the end, the onus of a sci-fi convention was outweighed by our love of the show, the chance to see and hear those who gave it to us, and maybe, just maybe, hear some good news we've been waiting for since the soul-free morons at a low-rent cable channel broke their promises and robbed us of our joy a year ago.
The chances of that good news are looking better and better. Months of rumors of a miniseries to wrap up the prematurely canceled series have swelled this week to the point that websites are reporting a forthcoming announcement, and their sources claim the show's production office in Sydney is populated again. The Jim Henson Company* has doused reports of any announcement coming tomorrow, but that's not going to snuff the buzz that's bound to hit the convention at Burbank. After all, the show's producers broke the news of cancellation to fans in an online chat before the network got around to it, so it's not too unlikely to expect that good news would be saved to share with the fans too.
Announcement or not, we're bracing for our nerdly journey. Tonight:
Robbie: I hope our trip isn't too geeky.
Me: We're going to a sci-fi convention.
Robbie: You're right. We're geeks.
Me: Not only that, when we get back, we're spending the next day putting together a computer.
The computer's for me. Over the past year, we – meaning, Robbie for me – have been gradually replacing the parts of my five-year-old desktop, and the key last pieces arrived today: swanky new case, new motherboard, new AMD processor, new memory, and Windows XP. After we get those in, all that's left of the original Dell (which has served me well) will be the monitor, the DVD drive (cutting-edge at the time), the zip drive (purely decorative at this point), and the floppy drive (which I still use to back up Quicken).
Even with all that, our geek cred's on probation. We haven't quite gotten around to seeing the third Matrix yet. We'll get around to it. Maybe.

* Another good sign: the Henson website these days pushes Farscape more than it did when the series was running.
